Responsible Care® is the chemical industry’s global
voluntary initiative under which companies, through their
national associations, work together to continuously
improve their health, safety and environmental
performance. The Responsible Care® ethic was commended by
UNEP as making a significant contribution to sustainable
development at the World Summit on Sustainable
Development in 2002. The Responsible Care® program serves
as an umbrella program for all of Sasol O&S's activities
in the safety, health, environmental, and security areas.
There are 7 code elements of the program; CAER (Community
Awareness and Emergency Response), Pollution Abatement,
Process Safety, Safety and Health, Distribution,
Security, and Product Stewardship. The codes give
excellent guidance on how a company should balance legal
compliance and being a good corporate citizen. Each code
includes management practices that can be used a a guide
allowing a company to determine if its practices in these
7 areas meet the standard set by Responsible Care® for
Practice in Place. Companies may also choose to include
Responsible Care performance in their ISO 14000
management system..
