Sasol Olefins and Surfactants was formed in Brunsbüttel, Germany. In 1961,
the U.S.-based Continental Oil Company (CONOCO) and
Deutsche Erdöl-Aktiengesellschaft (DEA) established CONDEA Petrochemie.
A plant was constructed to convert petrochemical feedstocks (ethylene)
into linear, even-numbered fatty alcohols. CONOCO withdrew from the joint
venture in 1986.
In 1991, CONDEA purchased Vista Chemical Company in the U.S. and D.A.C.
Industrie Chimiche in Italy. Enichem Augusta in Italy was acquired in
1995 and merged with D.A.C in 1999 to become CONDEA Augusta.
A joint venture between CONDEA and Huntsman Corporation in 1997 created
Europe's largest maleic anhydride producer. The acquisitions continued
with the purchase of CONTENSIO Chemicals in 1998 and its subsidiary,
Servo Delden, in The Netherlands. On March 1, 2001, the CONDEA group was acquired by
Sasol Limited (Johannesburg, South Africa), and is now a part of
Sasol Chemical Industries.
